Recently, South Africa's Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, talked about the Social Security Agency (SASSA) during the 2024 budget announcement. He said that SASSA grants will go up in 2024 by about 5%. This is important news for many South Africans who depend on these grants for money.
What Are SASSA Grants?
SASSA helps people in South Africa who need money for things like clothes, food, and a place to live. They give grants to lots of different people, from kids to older folks and those with disabilities.
In the 2024 budget, the government has set aside a big chunk of money, R66 billion, for helping people. Out of that, R36 billion will be used to keep giving out grants until March 31, 2024. This shows that the government knows how important these grants are to many South Africans.
SASSA Grant Increase in 2024
The 5% increase in SASSA grants for 2024 is good news, but we need to understand it better. South Africa's costs for things like food and rent are going up by 5.7% each year. So, the grant increase might not cover all the extra costs of living.
Here are the different types of SASSA grants that will go up in 2024:
- Older people will get R2,105 if they're over 75 and R1,985 if they're under 75.
- War veterans will get R2,105.
- People with disabilities will get R2,085.
- Foster care grants will be R1,125, up from R1,050.
- Care Dependency Grants will be R2,085.
- Child support grants will go from R480 to R505.
- Grant-in-aid schemes will increase from R480 to R500.
These increases are meant to make life better for the people who rely on these grants.
SRD Grant Extension
The government is also extending the SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant until 2024. Even though it will stay at R350 per month, they hope it will help because of the rising costs. The Finance Minister is putting R36 billion to keep this grant going, taking into account the higher cost of living.
The exact details of these grant increases for 2024 aren't known yet, but we hope they'll help many people who are struggling with their daily expenses.
When Do You Get Paid?

Helping Those in Need
SASSA grants are a big help for many South Africans who are struggling with money problems and higher living costs. These grants give them the money they need for basics and a better life. While there are challenges like inflation, the 5% increase in grants for 2024 shows that the government cares about people in need. As the new year comes closer, many will be waiting for the official announcement of the grant increases, hoping it will make their lives a bit easier.
